Lake Burley Griffin
Canberra's large man-made lake was constructed in 1963 and is located right in the centre of Canberra city. It is an ideal place to participate in many water sports including boating. Because it is located in the heart of Canberra city, prominent national buildings such as such as the National Museum of Australia, National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia and the High Court of Australia lie by its shores. Another feature of the lake is the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet that throws six tonnes of water about 15 kilometres into the air. The lake is an ornamental body with a length of 11 kilometres. Though swimming in the lake is uncommon, it is used for a wide variety of other activities, such as rowing, fishing, and sailing. Toxic blue-green algae blooms are a reasonably common occurrence in the lake. Fireworks are often held over the lake on New Year's Eve. |
