Wooden architecture can be found throughout Russia, but Kizhi Island boasts some of the nation's most famous, and most intricate examples.
These structures on Kizhi Island date from various centuries (the oldest from the 14th century), and they have been transported to the island in order to preserve them
and make them accessible to the public. The complex of buildings original to Kizhi Island, the Pogost of Our Savior, is on UNESCO's World Heritage Site list.
The famous Church of the Transfiguration, built in the 18th century, boasts 22 onion domes.

Kizhi Museum
It is one of the largest open-air museums in Russia. This is an unique historical, cultural and natural complex enlisted on the Code of the Most Significant Cultural Heritage Sites of the Peoples of the Russian Federation. The basis of the museum collection is the architectural ensemble of the Kizhi Pogost included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. |
Windmill
This windmill was taken from a village called Volkostrov and rebuilt on the island of Kishi. What you cannot see in the first moment is the fact that the whole mill is fixed on a turnable platform, so it can be adjusted according to the wind-directions. Unfortunately you cannot enter that windmill and there is even a fence around of it, so you cannot see it but from a distance. |
Chapel
The Archangel Michael Chapel from Lelikozero dates back to the early 18th century and is one of the buildings that were taken from other parts of Russia to Kizhi island. They have a lovely iconostasis there. But at least we were able to listen to the bells of this tiny church. Maybe they did that because there were 4 cruise-ships there in that day of early June 2009. |
Oshenev's House
The house of the peasant Oshevnev is the most beautiful and most interesting house of the southern part of Kizhi island. And it is also one of the few buildings that you are able to enter and take a closer look at the ancient architecture and interesting furniture. This farmhouse also includes a Banja, a russian sauna-house, that was built directely at the lake |
